Nagasawa Kanaye was born in Kagoshima, Japan, in 1852. He was one of the 15 Satsuma students at age 12 or 13. In fact, Satsuma students were the first students who were secretly sent to United Kingdom in the nineteenth century, when foreign travels were forbidden, in order to learn Western customs, technology, and systems with the purpose of modernizing Japan.
Nagasawa Kanaye was called “Prince Nagasawa” or “Baron Nagasawa” because of his samurai heritage. Also, in 2007 a 33-acre park was named in his honor.
The event in memory of him is arranged by our company, Ai-road Inc., which will be held in Kanoya on 16th November and in Osaka on 19th Nov.
Kichiro Tago is author of “Budo-ou ni natta Last Samurai”, a book written about Nagasawa Kanaye. He is going to talk about him and the relationship of England and Kagoshima in the event. You can join the event and know more about his struggles and achievements.
